Speedlight Grid Comparison Test
This is a comparison between various speedlight or flash Grid that I have at the present. All shoot is done at ISO 100 f/4.5 1/100s. The reason is that I have a 70-200 f/4L IS USM that I’d like to use for it.
The flash is at a constant 35mm at 1/8th power and the distance from the front of the flash to the wall is 7’. and the flash is trigger by Radio Popper JR2 Transmitter and JRX Receiver with RPCube.
And oh, before I forgot I used Sigma 35 f/1.4 Art and Canon 6D for this test.
These are the list of grids that I tested:
1. Spinlight 360 Black Grid
2. Spinlight 360 White Grid
3. Spinlight 360 White Snoot
4. Rogue 3-in-1 Flash Grid as a snoot (no Grid)
5. Rogue 3-in-1 Flash Grid with 45°
6. Rogue 3-in-1 Flash Grid with 25°
7. Rogue 3-in-1 Flash Grid with 16° (45° and 25° together)
8. Opteka 1/4 Grid
9. Opteka 1/8 Grid
And here are the results:
Bare Flash
1. Spinlight 360 Black Grid
2. Spinlight 360 White Grid
3. Spinlight 360 White Snoot
4. Rogue 3-in-1 Flash Grid as a snoot (no Grid)
5. Rogue 3-in-1 Flash Grid with 45°
6. Rogue 3-in-1 Flash Grid with 25°
7. Rogue 3-in-1 Flash Grid with 16° (45° and 25° together)
8. Opteka 1/4 Grid
9. Opteka 1/8 Grid
All Metering is done with Sekonic L-358, and the lost of light is between 1/3 to 1 stop.
As I said above, the bare flash is at 1/8 Power at f/4.5. I measured the center only and here's the breakdown of the lost of light,
1. Spinlight 360 Black Grid from 4.5 to 3.2 (1 Stop)
2. Spinlight 360 White Grid from 4.5 to 3.6 (2/3 Stop)
3. Spinlight 360 White Snoot from 4.5 to 4.0 (1/3 Stop)
4. Rogue 3-in-1 Flash Grid as a snoot (no Grid) No loss of light
5. Rogue 3-in-1 Flash Grid with 45° 4.5 to 3.6 (2/3 Stop)
6. Rogue 3-in-1 Flash Grid with 25° 4.5 to 3.6 (2/3 Stop)
7. Rogue 3-in-1 Flash Grid with 16° (45° and 25° together) 4.5 to 3.6 (2/3 Stop)
8. Opteka 1/4 Grid 4.5 to 3.6 (2/3 Stop)
9. Opteka 1/8 Grid 4.5 to 3.2 (1 Stop)
Conclusion:
All in all it depends on how do you take picture and what you need. But for me the Rogue 3-in-1 Flash Grid is very consistent and versatile in this test.
So I would recommend the Rogue 3-in-1 Flash Grid Because you get 4 modifiers in one package. I currently owned 3 of them.
I will post more of them in use in the near future.
